Solar on Water. No Land. No Compromise.
Floating solar is one of the fastest-growing segments of the global solar industry — and for very good reason. India alone has over 18,000 km² of reservoir surface area that can support floating solar installations, representing hundreds of gigawatts of untapped potential without consuming a single square metre of agricultural or forest land.
BARREL designs, supplies, and installs complete floating solar systems — from pontoon platform engineering through to mooring, anchoring, waterproof electrical systems, and grid connection. We also develop innovative hybrid floating solar + offshore wind configurations for coastal and large water body sites.
- Bathymetric survey, water quality assessment, and wave analysis
- HDPE pontoon float design, engineering, and manufacturing or sourcing
- Mooring system design — anchor type selection, chain/rope, and tension analysis
- Bifacial panel mounting on floating structures for dual-side generation
- Waterproof DC junction boxes, floating cable management systems
- Floating inverter stations or onshore central inverter arrangements
- Underwater or floating AC cable routing to onshore substation
- Wave and wind load structural analysis for platform stability
- Hybrid floating solar + wind turbine co-location engineering
- Environmental impact management — water oxygenation monitoring
Best of Both. Smarter Together.
Solar and wind are natural complements — solar peaks midday while wind often peaks in the morning, evening, and night. Co-locating both technologies on the same site with shared grid infrastructure produces a flatter, more consistent generation profile that is far more valuable to the grid than either technology alone.
BARREL's hybrid projects — currently planned at 2,500 MW each for STU and CTU — are designed with 1,500 MW solar and 1,000 MW wind sharing common pooling substations, transmission lines, and metering infrastructure. This dramatically reduces the cost per MW of evacuation and maximises the utilisation of the grid connection.
- Integrated site selection — overlapping solar irradiance and wind resource mapping
- Shared pooling substation and step-up transformer design for both technologies
- Common transmission line and evacuation infrastructure — one line, two sources
- Complementary generation profile optimisation — maximise CUF and PLF
- Floating solar + offshore wind hybrid for coastal and large reservoir sites
- Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) integration for round-the-clock supply
- Integrated SCADA for combined solar-wind-storage plant monitoring
- ISTS open access or STU/CTU PPA structuring for hybrid projects
1,500 MW per project — ground mount + floating solar in optimal ratio by site.
1,000 MW per project — onshore or hybrid offshore wind by location.
One substation, one transmission line, one metering system — maximum efficiency.
Battery storage integration for round-the-clock renewable power supply.
